Teaching is special education is truly special. All teachers have the ability to shape and mold children into better, more productive adults and citizens, but special education teachers have the unique ability to touch lives that many others may shun. Children that are limited by physical and mental disabilities have far fewer opportunities for interaction and enrichment than other children often do. Teachers have the ability to remove some of the shackles that hold these students back.
Providing a rich classroom experience full of love and acceptance is the first job for a special education teacher. This will be their home away from home where their abilities are not only challenged but rewarded. For many students, it will be their first experience outside the safe environment of their home and family. Making it positive will give them a better perception of how the rest of the world will treat them.
Special education teachers have to be quite creative in order to provide for the needs of students with a wide range of both abilities and disabilities. It is far more difficult to develop classes and curriculums that meet such a broad spectrum of educational abilities. Most classes have to be individualized to an extent, and few teachers have this kind of time. Take full advantage of any teacher’s aid availability. Even one extra pair of hands can help.
Group activities are sometimes necessary to keep everyone in the classroom learning at the same time. Smaller groups that can match individual skill levels will help students to develop together when there are large gaps in learning capabilities among the students. Try to make sure that each group is working toward a common goal. Parents can sometimes be recruited to help out. Offer them as little as one work day per month and you can plan special activities for days when you have a helper.
