Getting the most out of an education requires having the confidence to do so. This is true of special needs students as much as anyone else. Instilling the confidence in our students to achieve their best, whatever it may be, is the path to a successful education. Confidence, quite simply, is believing in yourself: your talents, skills, worth, value and even your beauty.
There are some simple things that can build confidence in anyone, and it will also help our special needs children. First, look your best every time you leave the house. Before school or even before a trip to the store, brush your hair and teeth. Trade the ratty t shirt for something a little nicer. If your child feels that they look their best when they get to school, they will almost automatically have more confidence.
Small physical achievements motivate us. Displays of strength and endurance give us a feeling of power as human beings. It is easy to feel powerless in this society when you are a little different than most other people. Playground activities and exercise at home help special needs students see how strong and special their bodies are. It will also encourage them to take better care of their bodies by eating healthier and avoiding bad habits such as smoking, alcohol and drugs.
Reading is another excellent way to instill confidence in special needs children. Keep plenty of good books on hand that are at their reading level or just above their reading level. It is important to keep refreshing the reading supply. They will not gain as much confidence by reading the same book over and over. Accomplishing new goals will help them build confidence and be motivated to take on new challenges. Be sure not to take away a very special book, though. If they have a favorite that makes them feel better to read, by all means keep it handy.
The confidence to achieve is pivotal in anyone’s success. Taking on challenges, big or small, will lead to more success. The more success we attain, the more we are willing to try.
